RESUMO

The Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) experiences one of the highest rates of sea surface warming globally, leading to potential changes in biological communities. Long-term phytoplankton monitoring in Potter Cove (PC, King George Island, South Shetlands) from the 1990s to 2009 revealed consistently low biomass values, and sporadic blooms dominated by cold-water microplankton diatoms. However, a significant change occurred between 2010 and 2020, marked by a notable increase in intense phytoplankton blooms in the region. During this period, the presence of a nanoplankton diatom, Shionodiscus gaarderae, was documented for the first time. In some instances, this species even dominated the blooms. S. gaarderae is recognized for producing blooms in temperate waters in both hemispheres. However, its blooming in the northern Southern Ocean may suggest either a recent introduction or a range shift associated with rising temperatures in the WAP, a phenomenon previously observed in experimental studies. The presence of S. gaarderae could be viewed as a warning sign of significant changes already underway in the northern WAP plankton communities. This includes the potential replacement of microplankton diatoms by smaller nanoplankton species. This study, based on observations along the past decade, and compared to the previous 20 years, could have far-reaching implications for the structure of the Antarctic food web.

Objectives: To present our experience in the mana gement of patients with IPN with antibiotics (without drainage). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed cases with a diagnosis of IPN from January 2018 to October 2020, focusing on those cases that were treated conservatively (hydro-electrolyte, nutritional support and antibiotics). The diagnosis was made by observing gas in the re troperitoneum by CT or by clinical deterioration of the patient with pancreatic necrosis without another focus. Fine needle aspiration was not performed. Results: We identified 25 patients with a diagnosis of IPN; eleven were treated conservatively. According to Atlanta, modified in 2012, 3 were classified severely and the rest moderately severe. All received antibiotics for at least 3 weeks. None required parenteral nutrition. The mean hospital stay was 38 days. Three patients were readmitted. 8 underwent cholecystectomy after having resolved the condition; the rest were already cholecys tectomized. There were no deaths in this series. Conclusions: IPN can be treated conservatively without drainage with good results in selected cases.

RESUMO

Structural metastability of viral capsids is pivotal for viruses to survive in harsh environments and to undergo timely conformational changes required for cell entry. Mammalian orthoreovirus (reovirus) is a model to study capsid metastability. Following initial disassembly of the reovirus particle mediated by proteases, a metastable intermediate called the infectious subvirion particle (ISVP) is generated. Using a σ1 monoreassortant virus, we recently showed that σ1 properties affect its encapsidation on particles and the metastability of ISVPs. How metastability is impacted by σ1 and whether the lower encapsidation level of σ1 is connected to this property is unknown. To define a correlation between encapsidation of σ1 and ISVP stability, we generated mutant viruses with single amino acid polymorphisms in σ1 or those that contain chimeric σ1 molecules composed of σ1 portions from type 1 and type 3 reovirus strains. We found that under most conditions where σ1 encapsidation on the particle was lower, ISVPs displayed lower stability. Characterization of mutant viruses selected for enhanced stability via a forward genetic approach also revealed that in some cases, σ1 properties influence stability without influencing σ1 encapsidation. These data indicate that σ1 can also influence ISVP stability independent of its level of incorporation. Together, our work reveals an underappreciated effect of the σ1 attachment protein on the properties of the reovirus capsid. IMPORTANCE Reovirus particles are comprised of eight proteins. Among them, the reovirus σ1 protein functions engages cellular receptors. σ1 also influences the stability of an entry intermediate called ISVP. Here, we sought to define the basis of the link between σ1 properties and stability of ISVPs. Using variety of mutant strains, we determined that when virus preparations contain particles with a high amount of encapsidated σ1, ISVP stability is higher. Additionally, we identified portions of σ1 that impact its encapsidation and consequently the stability of ISVPs. We also determined that in some cases, σ1 properties alter stability of ISVPs without affecting encapsidation. This work highlights that proteins of these complex particles are arranged in an intricate, interconnected manner such that changing the properties of these proteins has a profound impact on the remainder of the particle.

RESUMO

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element that by its antioxidant properties has been studied to elucidate its participation in the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes. We evaluated the association between cardiometabolic traits and serum Se levels in a sample of adults from southern Mexico. In 96 nondiabetic individuals, anthropometric data and clinical biochemistry measurements were analyzed. Serum total Se levels were measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum Se level in the whole sample was 10.309 ± 3.031 µg mL-1 and no difference between the women and men was observed (p = 0.09). Additionally, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was significantly associated with serum Se level (ß = -0.07 ± 0.03, p = 0.02, analysis adjusted for age, sex and BMI). Furthermore, sex shows significant interaction with FPG on the serum Se levels (p = 0.01). A follow-up analysis revealed the particular association between FPG and Se levels in women (ß = -0.10 ± 0.04, p = 0.01). In conclusion, our data evidenced a women-specific association between FPG and serum Se levels in a sample of adults from southern Mexico.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Little is known about the association between serum zinc (Zn) levels and obesity in the Mexican population. Therefore, we tested the association between serum Zn levels, obesity status, and serum lipid levels in a sample of Mexican adults. METHODS: Anthropometric data and serum levels of total cholesterol, high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C, respectively), and triglycerides were analyzed in 96 Mexican adults. Serum Zn was measured with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. An individual data meta-analysis of the association between serum Zn, overweight, and obesity status was performed in 172 adults from two different provinces in Mexico. RESULTS: Serum Zn was negatively associated with body mass index (BMI, ß = -0.034 ± 0.013, p = 2.0 ×10-6) and obesity (odds ratio [OR]= 0.990, 95% confidence interval [CI]= 0.980-0.999, p = 3.4 ×10-5). The association between Zn level and obesity in Mexican adults was confirmed with an individual data meta-analysis (OR= 0.977, 95% CI= 0.966-0.988, p = 3.4 ×10-5). In addition, a significant interaction effect between serum Zn level and sex was observed on LDL-C level (ß = 7.010 ± 3.295, p = 0.037). Serum Zn was negatively associated with LDL-C levels in women (ß = -0.188 ± 0.074, p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: Our results confirm the negative association of serum Zn level with obesity. For the first time, we show a sex-specific association between serum Zn and LDL-C levels in a Mexican population. However, further studies are needed in larger and more varied Mexican cohorts to replicate and confirm our findings.

RESUMO

The diversity of bacteriophages is likely unparalleled in the biome due to the immense variety of hosts and the multitude of viruses that infect them. Recent efforts have led to description at the genomic level of numerous bacteriophages that infect the Actinobacteria, but relatively little is known about those infecting other prokaryotic phyla, such as the purple non-sulfur photosynthetic α-proteobacterium Rhodobacter capsulatus. This species is a common inhabitant of freshwater ecosystems and has been an important model system for the study of photosynthesis. Additionally, it is notable for its utilization of a unique form of horizontal gene transfer via a bacteriophage-like element known as the gene transfer agent (RcGTA). Only three bacteriophages of R. capsulatus had been sequenced prior to this report. Isolation and characterization at the genomic level of 26 new bacteriophages infecting this host advances the understanding of bacteriophage diversity and the origins of RcGTA. These newly discovered isolates can be grouped along with three that were previously sequenced to form six clusters with four remaining as single representatives. These bacteriophages share genes with RcGTA that seem to be related to host recognition. One isolate was found to cause lysis of a marine bacterium when exposed to high-titer lysate. Although some clusters are more highly represented in the sequenced genomes, it is evident that many more bacteriophage types that infect R. capsulatus are likely to be found in the future.

The rapid increase in atmospheric temperature detected in the last decades in the Western Antarctic Peninsula was accompanied by a strong glacier retreat and an increase in production of melting water, as well as changes in the sea-ice dynamic. The objective of this study was to analyze the succession of micro- and mesozooplankton during a warm annual cycle (December 2010-December 2011) in an Antarctic coastal environment (Potter Cove). The biomass of zooplankton body size classes was used to predict predator-prey size relationships (i.e., to test bottom-up/top-down control effects) using a Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. The micro- and mesozooplanktonic successions were graphically analyzed to detect the influence of environmental periods (defined by the degree of glacial melting, sea-ice freezing and sea-ice melting) on coupling/uncoupling planktonic biomass curves associated to possible predator-prey size relationship scenarios. At the beginning of the glacial melting, medium and large mesozooplankton (calanoid copepods, Euphausia superba, and Salpa thompsoni) exert a top-down control on Chl-a and microzooplankton. Stratification of the water column benefitted the availability of adequate food-size (Chl-a <20) for large microzooplankton (tintinnids) development observed during fall. High abundance of omnivores mesozooplankton (Oithona similis and furcilia of E. superba) during sea-ice freezing periods would be due to the presence of available heterotrophic food under or within the sea ice. Finally, the increase in microzooplankton abundance in the middle of spring, when sea-ice melting starts, corresponded to small and medium dinoflagellates and ciliates species, which were possibly part of the biota of sea ice. If glacier retreat continues and the duration and thickness of the sea ice layer fluctuates as predicted by climate models, our results predict a future scenario regarding the zooplankton succession in Antarctic coastal environments.

Cardiac arrest in athletes has a high impact in family and society, fortunately its incidence is low. In athletes younger than 35 years old the most frequent causes are genetic anomalies and cardiomyopathies. We report the case of a 17 years old male patient who presented cardiac arrest and reanimation while doing physical activity. The post-reanimation electrocardiogram showed a subepicardial injury in the anterior face, detecting in cinecoronariography as only finding the presence of myocardial bridging in the middle third of anterior descending artery.

A collection of recombinant rotaviruses that express the fluorescent markers UnaG, mKate, mRuby, TagBFP, CFP, or YFP as separate proteins was generated. Genes for the fluorescent proteins were inserted into genome segment 7 without compromising expression of the protein NSP3. These recombinant rotaviruses are valuable for analyzing rotavirus biology by fluorescence-based live-cell imaging.

Introduction: heart failure (HF) is a high prevalence clinical condition with a high morbidity and mortality rate. Knowledge of our records is an essential tool to approach this disease. Objetive: to analyze the record of patients admitted to the coronary care unit (CCU) at the Hospital Privado del Sur (HPS) in Bahía Blanca, who were diagnosed with HF. Materials and Methods: cross-sectional descriptive study of patients admitted at the CCU in the HPS from July 2016 to July 2017 with a discharge diagnosis of HF. From the CCU database the following variables were obtained: age, gender, cardiovascular risk factors (CRF), trigger causes, co-morbidities, ejection fraction (EF), need for inotropics and mechanical ventilation, number of days in hospital and number re-admissions. Statistical Analysis: In the qualitative variable analysis absolute and relative frequencies were analyzed. Median was used for quantitative variables. Statistical data collection and analysis was performed using the SPSS software. Results: 85 patients were registered, 58 males (68.2%); 70 (82.4%) older than 65 years; pathologies: 66 (77.6 %) presented HBP, 27 (31.8 %) diabetes, 37 (4.5 %) dyslipidemia, 30 (35.3 %) a history of Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI), and 17 (20.0 %) auricular fibrillation. The most frequent triggers were dietary transgression, arrhythmia and infection. They presented Ejection Fractions (EF) lower than 40 %: 45 patients (52.9 %). The median of days in hospital was 5 (2-53). Seven (8.2%) patients were re-admitted into hospital, whose median was 1 (Score 1-5). Conclusions: Among triggers, cardiovascular risk factors and number of days in hospital were similar to those reported in the bibliography. However, re-admission rate was lower and mainly associated to reduced EF.

Introduction. The fragmented QRS (fQRS) represents a ventricular conduction delay caused by a myocardial scar and may be associated with an increased risk of mortality and arrhythmics events. Objective. The fQRS correlate with regional motility disorders and their association with the outcome of coronary angiography and get fQRS clinical value to identify the population at risk in the course of an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Materials and methods. It retrospectively evaluated patients admitted our institution with a diagnosis of ACS. Searched the electrocardiogram (ECG) the presence of fQRS and related it to the commitment of wall motion by echocardiography and coronary anatomy. Results. There were evaluated 116 patients, average age 64.6% years (75% male). The 78.2% corresponded to ACS without ST segment elevation, of which 36% had fQRS, like 68% that had ST elevation. Among the whole of patients, the 47.4% presented fQRS. In 72% of patients showed some kind of parietal motility disorders in echocardiogram (p< 0.03). The 28% of remaining cases had demonstrated the correlation between the wall with fQRS in the ECG and the hypokinetic or akinetic area by echocardiogram. The in-hospital global mortality was of 6.9%, of which 12.5% had fQRS. Among the patients with more than one vessel disease, 74.2% showed fQRS (p< 0.05) and 41% presented three vessels disease. Conclusions. The fQRS was associated significantly with the presence of more than one vessel disease and cardiogenic shock, but not with mortality. We found a huge association between the presence of regional contractility disorders and coronary anatomy, making possible the relationship between echocardiographic, hemodynamic and imaging data.

RESUMO

The productivity of any scientist is affected by cumbersome, tedious and time-consuming tasks that try to make the heterogeneous web services compatible so that they can be useful in their research. MOWServ, the bioinformatic platform offered by the Spanish National Institute of Bioinformatics, was released to provide integrated access to databases and analytical tools. Since its release, the number of available services has grown dramatically, and it has become one of the main contributors of registered services in the EMBRACE Biocatalogue. The ontology that enables most of the web-service compatibility has been curated, improved and extended. The service discovery has been greatly enhanced by Magallanes software and biodataSF. User data are securely stored on the main server by an authentication protocol that enables the monitoring of current or already-finished user's tasks, as well as the pipelining of successive data processing services. The BioMoby standard has been greatly extended with the new features included in the MOWServ, such as management of additional information (metadata such as extended descriptions, keywords and datafile examples), a qualified registry, error handling, asynchronous services and service replication. All of them have increased the MOWServ service quality, usability and robustness. MOWServ is available at http://www.inab.org/MOWServ/ and has a mirror at http://www.bitlab-es.com/MOWServ/.

RESUMO

MOTIVATION: Web services technology is becoming the option of choice to deploy bioinformatics tools that are universally available. One of the major strengths of this approach is that it supports machine-to-machine interoperability over a network. However, a weakness of this approach is that various Web Services differ in their definition and invocation protocols, as well as their communication and data formats-and this presents a barrier to service interoperability. RESULTS: jORCA is a desktop client aimed at facilitating seamless integration of Web Services. It does so by making a uniform representation of the different web resources, supporting scalable service discovery, and automatic composition of workflows. Usability is at the top of the jORCA agenda; thus it is a highly customizable and extensible application that accommodates a broad range of user skills featuring double-click invocation of services in conjunction with advanced execution-control, on the fly data standardization, extensibility of viewer plug-ins, drag-and-drop editing capabilities, plus a file-based browsing style and organization of favourite tools. The integration of bioinformatics Web Services is made easier to support a wider range of users. .
